When you own a vehicle, you will want it to stay in the best condition possible. By making sure you bring it to regular maintenance inspections, you can help prevent a severe part or component going out. No matter how much planning you do, there is probably going to be a car breakdown sometime during your life. So when and if your car does break down and leave you stranded on the side of the road, there are a few things which you should do in order to keep yourself and anyone with you safe. Follow a few safety procedures and you can get through the pain of dealing with a broken down car a little bit easier.
Move Safely Away from Traffic
Being near your car on the side of the road, especially when it is a busy road, is very dangerous. Cars could be a little too close to the side of the road and hit your or someone with you by accident. Get people as far away from the road as possible. If there is not anywhere safe to go, like a to a grassy part of the road or even to a business, then stay inside the car. Keep the doors shut and do not expose any arms or legs sticking out of a window to where traffic will go by. Cars might be going by very fast and will not be able to stop if you even step one foot out in the road.
Call For a Tow Truck
As soon as the car stops and you realize it is not going to run any further, make some phone calls. Who you call first is completely up to you. You might call a friend or a relative first and ask what you should do. They might tell you to call a tow truck, a repair shop or wait and they will come out and look. If you have a roadside assistance plan with your insurance company, then call for the tow truck to pick up your vehicle and deliver it so we can inspect the vehicle to see what the issue could be.
Wait in the Shade or someplace Safe
Instead of waiting next to your car in the blistering heat, find the cool shade somewhere. When the weather is freezing, keep inside the car to protect you from the elements. Do whatever you can to remain comfortable while you wait for a tow truck or someone to pick you up. Since the invention of cells phone, help is usually just one call away. Help can usually also arrive within thirty minutes, so you do not have to worry about being stranded for hours on end while you wait for someone to come and get you. Making sure you are well prepared for an unexpected breakdown can help you to remain calm in any situation. If you ever notice an issue with your vehicle, make sure to bring it in as soon as possible so we can inspect the parts and components for you.
