Spring is that special time of year when nature awakens from a long winter slumber. People everywhere start to get the urge to get out and see some piece of the world outside. Car trips are the most common way to travel, especially with the price of airplane tickets being very expensive. The best way to begin your spring traveling season is with general car maintenance. Doing these tasks will ensure that your car will perform for you throughout the entire season.
Benefits of Regular Maintenance
One benefit of regular maintenance is that you will have a chance to assess the condition of your car after the winter season. The winter, especially in the northern states, can be harsh on a car. Cold temperatures make the car engine and battery work harder to start and the snow and ice makes it harder to control and stop the car. If you inspect your car every spring, you will be able to see the effects winter had on your car and make the repairs and tweaks necessary to bring it back to full potential for the spring. The spring inspection will also give you a chance to swap out the winter preparations you made for the original parts. For instance, if you use winter grade engine oil and snow tires in the winter, the spring is the time when you remove the winter grade items and replace them with regular oil and tires. You will also save money at the gas pump and on car repair by keeping your parts cleaned and maintained.

You should begin with a visual inspection of your car. Look at the headlights, fog lights, and tail lights and make sure they are clean and whole. Clean them and repair or replace any broken parts. Make sure your tires have a good amount of tread on them. If they do not or you notice the tread is wearing unevenly or only on one side, it may be time to replace or rotate them. Look at the car straight on from the rear. Do the tires line up in a straight line? If not, it may be time for a wheel alignment. You should also be able to see if you have anything unusual hanging down underneath the car.
Take a Closer Look at the Innards
Under the hood, you should check the oil to see if you need an oil change. Be sure to change the air and oil filters when you change the oil. Clear the area of all loose foliage that may have collected on top of the engine and battery. Make sure the battery terminals and connections are clear of any debris or corrosion; you may have to scrub vigorously to remove the corrosion. Check all of the connections and make sure they are secure and that all of the rubber tubing is supple and flexible where it should be. Make sure your fluid levels are where they should be and top them off if they are not. Check your tire pressure to make sure that they are properly inflated. The simple things you can do for your car will make all of the difference down the road. You will be able to get your spring traveling season underway with no problems.
