car-maintenance-2

The battery is an important part of the vehicle. Without it, you will not be able to drive your vehicle. Extreme temperatures and overcharging are the main reasons for a shortened battery life. If the battery is exposed to extreme heat, it causes the battery fluid to evaporate. This leads to internal structural damage of the battery. Cold temperatures can increase the thickness of the oil. This makes the engine harder to turn over and results in the battery working harder as well. When the battery works harder in the cold temperatures, this can lead to slower starts of the vehicle. If the battery is overcharged, the voltage regulator may be defective. This will then allow for too high of a charging rate, and lead to the battery needing to be replaced sooner.

Charging the Battery

If the system is overcharging, it can damage the battery quickly. The same applies for undercharging the battery. If you are unsure of the correct rate it should be charged at, make sure to bring it in. We can inspect the battery as well as how it is recharging. By having the battery inspected by us, all areas will be checked. This is helpful because there might be sides or components that you cannot see on the battery, that might be causing it to drain quicker. In some instances, a new battery may be needed.

Have a Clean Battery

In order for the battery to work the most efficient way possible, it should be in a clean condition. The top of the battery should be clean. If there is any dirt buildup, make sure to wipe it away. Dirt can become a conductor and will drain the battery’s power. Corrosion should also be cleaned off of the battery. If it accumulates on the terminals, it then becomes an insulator. This will lead to poor current flow from the battery to your vehicle. The terminals should be inspected so they are not damaged or broke. This can impair the ability for it to start your vehicle.

Regular Maintenance for the Battery

To help keep the battery in ideal conditions, make sure to bring the vehicle in for regular maintenances. We can inspect the battery as well during this time to make sure it is in the best condition possible. Sometimes a slow start for your vehicle may not necessarily mean it is the battery. We can examine the issue and locate the source of the problem.
