Tips for a Longer Lasting Battery

One way to help prevent premature battery failure is be aware of the distance you travel with each trip. Lots of short trips can cause the battery to lose its charge more quickly than if you take longer road trips. This is because the battery does not fully recharge each time if you make several short trips in a row. Instead, try to turn all the small trips into a single larger trip. This can help save wear and tear on your vehicle as well as the battery.

If headlights or interior lights are left on for your vehicle, you may be doing more harm than you realize. This can cause the battery to drain and wear out quicker than it should. Whenever you turn off your vehicle, make sure the headlights get turned off as well. Also make sure the interior lights go off in your vehicle once you shut the door. This will help to reduce the chance the lights will cause the battery to lose charge over a length of time.

If you plan on storing your vehicle for a length of time without use, make sure to contact us so we can advise you on proper storage care. If the vehicle is inactive for long lengths of time, the battery will be strained and lose power. This may cause it to have a low charge when you try to start it the next time. Disconnecting the battery from the terminals can help reduce the amount of strain that is placed on the battery.

Extreme temperatures can affect the battery’s life as well. The heat can cause the battery’s chemicals to react together and cause damage to the battery. This may result in a new battery being needed for your vehicle. The extreme cold may also interfere with the vehicle starts. The battery will become slow and harder to start when the temperatures are cold.

Any external device you have plugged into your vehicle can result in your battery having a low charge. These external devices like a GPS or cell phone being plugged into your vehicle can affect the lifespan of the battery. Always make sure to plug in devices that are absolutely necessary. This can help to preserve the life of the battery as long as possible.
